Carnival drag queen gala

Lacquered wigs, brazen make-up and dazzling designs of all shapes and sizes will be on parade, and the judges will be looking for originality, imagination and personality.

The jury, which will consist of people associated with the fashion industry in Torremolinos, will also assess the drag queen's ease and grace when strutting their flamboyant designs on stage.

Hours will have been spent sticking sequins and feathers to ostentatious costumes that are limited only by the imagination of the person who is to wear it.

The event will begin in the Plaza La Nogalera at 9pm and it promises to be a festival that will contain all of the outrageousness associated with world of drag.

Aida Blanes, councillor for Culture, said, "This gala is the first in Torremolinos and it will be a very colourful and exciting event. Let's hope that it grows and becomes one of the biggest gay carnivals in southern Spain."

The winner, along with those in second and third place, will go on to participate in this year's edition of 'Pride de Torremolinos'.

This popular festival is based on the Gay Pride celebrations that traditionally take place all over the world throughout June.

The drag queen gala kicks off the 2017 edition of the Torremolinos carnival. The carnival begins with a gala in the municipal auditorium at 9pm on Monday night and continues until Sunday 12 March. Entry is free.

There will also be several events held in the Plaza La Nogalera and Plaza Costa del Sol throughout the week.
