Two weeks after an error in the interpretation of the lockdown rules saw Novak Djokovic and the Puente Romano Tennis Club in Marbella get in a spot of trouble, the world tennis number one returned on Monday, this time with the government's regulations on his side.

As he did on 4 May, the Serbian took part in a sparring session with local player Carlos Gómez Herrera (428th in the ranking) on the main Manolo Santana court.

Djokovic had to smooth out the clay surface with a brush on several occasions, as the health protocols are strict in this respect as no operators are allowed on the court at the same time.

It is not unusual to see Djokovic playing with Gómez Herrera, a close friend of his brother, Marko, who, like Novak, spends large portions of the year on the Costa del Sol.

Novak, who has spent lockdown with his partner and children in a mansion he owns in La Zagaleta (Benahavís), habitually comes to the area but most often in the break in the calendar before switching surface.

The calendar in the ATP tour is officially suspended until 31 July, though with players coming from different continents (and the logistical difficulties it entails), the entire year could be written off.
