  • A goalless draw in Mérida sees the Costa side surrender first place to Cartagena

Marbella's time as league leaders lasted just one match day as a goalless draw in Mérida on Sunday saw David Cubillo's side concede top spot to Cartagena.

"It was a very difficult game," the coach admitted. "We knew that Mérida were a very competitive team but in the end we are very happy with the point."

The hosts were resolute in defence, keeping Marbella at bay for large periods of the match. Manel was the go-to man for the visitors as they looked to pick a gap through Mérida's compact defensive lines, but it wasn't until the 34th minute when they had their first shot through Elías, easily stopped by the keeper.

Many eyes were on this game following Marbella's surprise signing of former Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero.

The 32-year-old gave his side more control when he was introduced in the 71st minute but Manel and Callejón spurned chances in quick succession and the points were ultimately shared.
