The Malaga Academy project has been dealt yet another setback this week with the news that the new sports complex, in the Arraijanal district of Malaga city close to the airport, will not be ready in time for the summer as scheduled.
The stumbling block has been finance tied up in land owned by the club in El Viso which is being sold to form part of the expansion of the University of Malaga.
Though the 4.5-million-euro sale was agreed several years ago, red tape has held up the process and the club's relegation from La Liga has meant that alternative funding could not be found, bringing construction to a complete standstill. The construction firm Bilba has removed all machinery from the site.
Although it is now unlikely that the academy will be ready in time for the summer, the club expects to find out this week when the 4.5 million euros will be released so that it can plan the resumption of works.
