Santa María Polo Club has announced details of its programme of events for the spring and summer, with the Spring Polo Festival and the International Polo Tournament in the summer set to attract the biggest crowds.
The club, which is located next to the A-7/AP-7 junction (km 133) at Sotogrande, will this year be hosting its Spring Polo Festival almost every weekend from 28 March to 14 July. However, unlike in previous years, Family Polo Sundays will ensure a more family-orientated ambience with extra foodie options, entertainment, a kids play area and VIP areas.
The aim, says events manager, Alejandra Carazo, is to "offer something really special this year".
"We want people to have a taster of the magical polo atmosphere normally seen at our summer tournament. We want everyone to feel very welcome," she said.
Weekly tournaments typically start on Thursday or Friday and run until Sunday. Matches ordinarily start at 4pm and run until 7.30pm, while on Sundays they run from 11.30am to 2pm. Admission is free and food and drink is available from the many bars.
A grand slam
The Spring Polo Festival is followed in the heat of the summer by the International Polo Tournament, a world grand-slam event now in its 48th year, every day from 25 July to 31 August.
The world's best polo players will once again provide the backdrop for this popular event on the local social calendar. "We're expecting the best teams and superb displays of prize horses and skilled riders at the Santa María Polo Club here in Sotogrande for the summer," added Carazo. "As usual, there will be the exhilarating mix of daily top sporting action and a wonderful atmosphere for everyone, with entertainment and tented village with hospitality programme."
