There are just a few hours left until autumn officially begins, and it will be reflected in a change in the weather. The week will begin in Andalucía with cloudy skies, which could bring rain as early as today (20 September) in the region.
The weather forecasters indicate widespread low cloud, without ruling out occasional heavy showers, which will be more likely in the extreme east where they could be localised and strong.
Maximum temperatures will drop in the coastal areas while minimum temperatures will rise in the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga. In the rest of the provinces there will be little change and variable winds are expected.
The situation will be similar to that forecast in much of Spain, where an Atlantic front will cause instability on Monday in much of the north and east of the mainland, as well as in the Balearic Islands, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which also predicts that some of the rainfall could be strong and persistent in Catalonia.
Aemet has issued rain and alerts, with forecasts of between 15 and 30mm of rainfall in one hour in Gerona, Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, Alicante, Albacete and Murcia. In addition, storms may be accompanied by hail in Valencia and Alicante. On the coasts of Gerona, the Aemet has also issued a yellow warning for the risk rough seas with northerly force 7 winds and waves of between 2 to 3 metres expected.
