National coronavirus incidence rate in Spain falls 28 to stand at 317

  • The Ministry of Health registered more than 200 Covid deaths over the weekend and 23,899 new infections

Deaths from Covid-19 in Spain continue at high levels during the fifth wave of the pandemic. On Monday, 23 August, the Ministry of Health notified 201 coronavirus deaths over the weekend, some 76 more than the same day last week. The total number of deaths with a positive test since the start of the pandemic now stands at 83,337.

Infections, on the other hand, decreased slightly compared to last Monday with 23,899 (1,800 less). The global number of positives since March of last year is 4,794,352, according to official statistics.

Meanwhile, the downward trend in the cumulative incidence rate is reassuring. It stands at 317.35, some 28 fewer than on Friday and the lowest level since 9 July.

The situation in hospitals has worsened slightly. Covid patients occupy 7.11 per cent of total number of beds (6.97 per cent on Friday) and 20.04 per cent of intensive care units. There are 8,330 people admitted to wards with coronavirus and 1,839 are in an intensive care bed.
