The UN climate change conference kicks off in Madrid on Monday, 2 December, and runs until 13 December. It was due to be held in Chile but changed venues after recent violence there.
There was excitement in some parts this week over the imminent arrival, from America by catamaran, of teenage environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg.
Thunberg, whose criticism of lack of action on climate change has made her a household name, was offered passage by Australians, although bad weather means her arrival date in Europe is unknown.
Portugal is planning a special parliamentary session with her and the Spanish region of Extremadura has offered an electric car to take her from Lisbon to Madrid.
