Catalonia celebrates its Diada and thousands march for independence

Catalonia marked its annual regional holiday, the Diada, on Tuesday. The day is normally marked with lots of cultural symbolism but this year the centrepiece event was a huge rally through the centre of Barcelona in favour of independence.

Separatist leaders called for those held over last year's illegal referendum to be released. Opposition parties claimed that over half of Catalonia's population, "who don't support independence", felt excluded.
