Caution wins as Covid forces the Fuengirola Fair to be cancelled again

The announcement about the October event was made by the town's mayor, despite the significant improvement in the coronavirus data

Despite the fact that the Covid-19 situation has considerably improved, caution has won the day in Fuengirola. On Monday, 7 September, the town council announced the cancellation - for the second consecutive year - of the Fiestas del Rosario, the local fair that is traditionally held in October.

According to a statement issued by the council, the decision has been made in accordance with the recommendations of the Junta de Andalucía’s health authorities, and with the agreement of groups that support the event.

The decision was made public after the mayor, Ana Mula, met with Antonio Ramírez, president of the federation that includes 25 of the Peña assocations in the town, as well as representatives of the non-federated groups and political parties.

"We entrust ourselves to our Patron, the Virgen del Rosario, so that next year we will have an important fair, that we can celebrate and enjoy it, as long as this pandemic situation has passed," said the mayor.

Mula insisted that the decision had been unanimously agreed by all those present at the meeting, although she admitted that it was a "very difficult" decision and that it will be hard to explain to Fuengiroleños.

“We all really want to celebrate our Fair, but circumstances and security meant that we had to make the decision that there will be no Rosario Fair in 2021, although there will be fairground attractions for our children to enjoy,” said the council’s head.

The president of the Peñas Federation, Antonio Ramírez, acknowledged that they never wanted to make this decision for the second consecutive year. "But we think that organising a fair under these circumstances is not the most responsible thing to do, and I believe that this is the most appropriate option," he said.
