The strong sea swells that hit the Axarquia coast at the weekend forced lifeguards to raise the red flags on many beaches. Despite the bathing ban, many people turned a blind eye and still entered the sea.

In Torrox, lifeguards and Civil Protection volunteers were forced to rescue a woman who became trapped at the Corral de las Vacas area of El Peñoncillo beach at around 1pm on Sunday.

According to a statement from the town hall, the waves dragged the female to an area of rocks, where she managed to climb out of the sea, but the waves continued to batter her.

«Thanks to the help of Civil Protection volunteers, it has been possible to rescue the woman from the danger zone where she was trapped. They also provided support to calm her down and treat her scratches and bruises«, the statement added .

Access by a rescue craft was ruled out, because of the strong waves, and volunteers had to use a painter's ladder to reach the woman on the rocks.

The Torrox town hall has reminded all bathers to act «responsibly» when red flags are flying on the beaches.
