The crime rate in Malaga increased in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020, a year in which the figures were at a record low because of the pandemic and lockdown. The easing of restrictions has led to an increase of 17.5 per cent in crimes in the province.
According to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, there were more crimes against sexual freedom, injuries, robberies, thefts and vehicle thefts, while the numbers of sexual assaults and attempted murders decreased during those six months.
The biggest increase was in homicides and murders which were actually carried out, as these rose from three to eight between January and June this year (116 per cent more than in 2020). However, attempted murders dropped by 31.8 per cent from 22 to 15, and kidnappings also dropped from four to three.
There was quite a high increase in robberies, which went up from 6,248 to 7,390 (18 per cent more), while vehicle thefts rose by 32 per cent and drug trafficking by 18.8 per cent.
With regard to criminal injuries, these rose by 23.7 per cent, with a total of 376 offences compared with the 304 that took place between January and June last year.
There was another significant increase, which was offences in contravention of sexual freedom, which went up by 32.5 per cent, from 203 to 269. Other offences such as indecency and crimes against liberty also went up by 40.2 per cent, from 174 to 244.
The numbers of sexual assaults decreased in Malaga in the first half of this year, with a total of 25 compared with the 29 in the same period of 2020. This is a reduction of 13.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, robberies with violence and intimidation increased by 14.5 per cent to 560, although robberies with the use of force dropped by five per cent in establishments and by six per cent in private homes.
