Even though the number of new school-age children is falling in local, Malaga-province secondary schools as the birth rate has dropped, there is still a real lack of space particularly in coastal municipalities where more people have been attracted to live.
Benalmádena is one of the worst-hit areas with pupils well used to makeshift classrooms - its population was 40,000 in 2007 and is some 70,000 now.
The Junta de Andalucía regional government said this week that it is going to spend 15 million euros in the municipality to sort out the "schooling chaos" locally.
Among the plans confirmed is a completely new secondary school for 6.9 million euros in the Retamar area of Benalmádena Pueblo. The contract to design the project is being put out to tender.
There will also be a new primary school in the Finca Doña María area, near Torrequebrada, with a 4-million-euro investment - in this case, the project is more advanced as the construction contract is due to go out to tender. Other improvements in Benalmádena schools will bring the total spent to 15m euros.
