A lack of adequate facilities at some Costa schools has been casting a shadow over the start of the school year once again.
109 first-year pupils at IES La Cala secondary school on Mijas Costa didn't have classrooms to go to this week as extra prefabs needed hadn't been put up in time. It's a story that has been repeating itself in one form or another along the coast.
In Benalmádena, El Panal infant school has no dining room. Pupils at IES Las Chapas in Marbella have been in prefabs since 2019 while plans for a new school are finalised. In San Pedro, 1,500 students pack into IES Salduba school while waiting for a delayed new building for the area to start.
In the case of La Cala, four prefabricated buildings should be going in, but in the meantime even with using the library and the gym, they are still classrooms short.
