  • The annual initiative on the coast wants to collect enough to buy 300 pairs of footwear for disadvantaged children, so they can start the new school term on the right foot

A campaign has been launched to help 300 needy children on the Costa del Sol start the year new academic year on the right foot.

The initiative, started by the Cofradía de Estudiantes students association in Malaga’s El Palo neighbourhood some 16 years ago, is now expanding along the coast to include Torremolinos as well as the Bailén and Campanillas areas.

Initially the group helped supply around 100 disadvantaged children with new footwear at the Virgen de la Milagrosa School in the Malaga district, after the sisters sent a list of the needy pupils to the group.

In 2020 the association turned to the La Caixa Foundation to extend the scheme to more children in other neighbourhoods and 200 pairs of shoes were donated.

But this year they want to expand the initiative even further and want to acquire 300 pairs of footwear, and have managed to enlist the support of El Corte Inglés.

Promoting the campaign one month before the start of the term, the association is asking the Malaga public to make a donation to the fund, with the average cost of a pair of shoes of being around 20 euros, and help to make a child happy starting school with decent footwear.
