  • The body of the 22-year-old man was found by the emergency services at the weekend

A young man died in the early hours of Saturday morning, in Malaga city, after he became trapped in a charity container for donated clothes.

Apparently, the man was alone and, after climbing onto a chair to access the mouth of the container, he lost his footing, fell and became trapped.

The incident happened in the Arroyo de los Ángeles area at around 6am According to SUR sources, the deceased was 22 years old and of Northwest African origin.

First investigations point to death by suffocation but experts at the city’s Institute of Legal Medicine will perform an autopsy on the body to confirm this.

The Madre Coraje organisation began to report a wave of thefts from its containers in 2016. This led them to install metal plates to prevent thieves from taking clothes that the public donated to help the good cause.

Several cases were reported of thieves, equipped with sticks with hooks on the end, stealing garments that were sold in second-hand markets in Spain and also abroad.
