An employee at a hotel in Torremolinos, who allegedly broke into a safe in the resort, has been arrested by police as he attempted to flee Spain carrying some 15,000 euros in cash.

The man, using cutting tools, was spotted on closed-circuit television cameras by security staff at the hotel who raised the alarm and alerted the Local Police in the Costa del Sol town.

The local town councillor responsible for security, Antonio Ruiz, said that officers identified the alleged thief who turned out to be a hotel employee. Officers went to the man's home but he was not there, and they tried to call his phone but there was no response.

However, further investigations led the Local Police to Malaga bus station, where they arrested him just before he took a bus to Morocco.

The man was carrying 15,000 euros in cash and various items of jewellery.
