Malaga's blood reserves are running dangerously low and the stocks only hold enough to guarantee supply to hospitals for one day.

Faced with this situation, the Regional Centre for Blood Transfusion (CRTS) has made an urgent appeal to for people to donate at special sessions that are being held this Monday and Tuesday (14 and 15 June) at its facilities, located at the Civil Hospital in Malaga, from nine in the morning to nine at night. CRTS said the goal is to reach 600 donations and welcomes donors from all blood groups.

On Tuesday, 15 June, there is the opportunity to donate at the mobile unit that will be next to Hipercor in Mijas Costa, from 10am to 2pm and 5.30pm to 9.30pm. To attend this donation session it is necessary to make an appointment on the numbers: 951 034 120 or 951 034 121 (Monday and Tuesday, from 9am to 2pm).

Every day 250 bags of blood are needed in Malaga to be able to maintain sufficient stock and cover all the demands of the hospitals, said the acting director of the CRTS, Gracia María García.

To be a blood donor in Spain you have to meet certain criteria. You have to be aged between 18 and 65, weigh more than 50 kilos and be in good health. Men can donate blood up to four times a year and women three. A health questionnaire must be completed before the donation session.

Anyone who lived in the UK for more than a year between 1980 and 1996 cannot donate, however, due to fears about Creutzfeld-Jacob, or Mad Cows, disease.
