Residents living close to the Leoni Benabu airfield near Vélez-Málaga have formed a group and started a petition on Change.org against the noise, nuisance and danger they claim is caused by planes using the site.

The group have written to Spain's air safety agency, AESA urging them to adopt "urgent measures" to stop planes flying over built-up areas and to revise flight plans, which the group believe do not comply with air safety laws.

"I have lived here for 10 years and up until a year ago we didn't notice the planes so much, but since then the flights have become much more frequent," said group spokesperson, Victor Morales.

President of the Real Aeroclub de Málaga, which runs the airfield, Jesús Guerrero, dismissed the complaints saying they "come in phases" and tend to be from "foreigners who have illegal homes that they use as tourist apartments".

He added that all flights are authorised by Spain's civil aviation agency and have "scrupulous flight plans".
