Experts are warning that up to 200mm of rain could fall in parts of Malaga province delivering almost a fifth of the total annual rainfall in just three days.
Storm ‘Filomena’ arrived in the south of Spain on Wednesday afternoon, although not with the expected intensity.
The original amber alert for Malaga, Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce has now been downgraded to yellow by Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, but experts say it is still necessary to exercise extreme caution.
The director of the Malaga Meteorological Centre, José María Sánchez-Laulhé, explained that the collision of two air masses is responsible for the forecast downpours. There is a very cold one over the Peninsula and a hot and humid front that will enter through the Gulf of Cadiz.
"This is going to cause abundant rains, which in Malaga city could reach 100mm and in parts of the west of the province up to 200mm," he said.
If these amounts are confirmed, it would mean that between Wednesday and Friday Malaga would receive almost a fifth of its total annual rainfall.
