  • A group of around forty young adults, in the city for a summer school to learn Spanish, are in isolation with staff members in a student residence

A group of French students and several members of staff at a Spanish summer school have been quarantined in a Malaga residence one student tested positive for Covid-19.

The infected woman forms part of a group of around 40 students aged around 20, who arrived in the city a few days ago for a Spanish course, SUR has learned from health service sources.

After two days in the city, spent living in the Arunda student residence and doing some sightseeing, including a coach trip, the young woman reported that her boyfriend had contacted her from France to say that he had just tested positive for Covid-19. She was given a PCR test on Sunday at the Clínico hospital and was also found to be infected with the virus.

Sources have said that the student has only suffered mild symptoms such as a slight fever and loss of the sense of smell.

Once the case was confirmed, the entire group of students was isolated in the residence, as well as members of staff who had been in contact with the patient.

Two new outbreaks

The regional Health Ministry also reported the detection of another two local Covid-19 outbreaks in Malaga province on Sunday, taking the total to six.

One is in the Malaga health district (this includes the city, Rincón de la Victoria, Almogía, Moclinejo, Totalán and Macharaviaya), with seven cases of infection, and the other in the Guadalhorce Valley district, with five.

Both outbreaks are currently under active investigation, which means that people who have been in contact with the patients are being traced and tested, so more cases have not been ruled out.

Another outbreak, located in the Guadalhorce district some days ago, is also still in the investigation phase and the total number of positives went up from nine to 13 on Sunday.

The rest of the "clusters" of cases in Malaga province are considered to be under control, with no new cases reported in Casabermeja, no increase on the 109 infected in the Red Cross shelter outbreak, and one new case reported at the Ronda care home.

The total number of positive cases in all these local outbreaks in Malaga was 142 on Sunday.

In the region of Andalucía as a whole, there are 19 active outbreaks including 349 cases of infection.
