Bars and restaurants prepare to reopen with restrictions, without knowing when

The government's unconfirmed plans for the gradual recovery of normality mention no firm dates, but make it clear that bars, restaurants and other leisure establishments will be among the last to recover their activity.

Another point that the sector is clear about is that, in the new post coronavirus lockdown era, their business will be subject to restrictions.

Aware that extra space will have to be left between tables, bar owners have called for the local authorities to allow them to occupy more space with their pavement terraces. Malaga city hall has already agreed to study the requests, case by case. They have also asked to be able to extend opening hours to be able to serve more customers.

Other new obligations will include hygiene measures. Initial advice given by the Spanish hostelry association includes providing hand sanitiser for customers, regularly disinfecting all surfaces and keeping enclosed areas well ventilated.

Meanwhile nightclub owners in Malaga province, aware that they are right at the back of the reopening queue, have asked not to be subject to distancing restrictions, when they are eventually allowed to reopen. "No one is going to go to a club to dance by themselves without being able to go near to anyone else," said one owner.
