More than 11,000 supermarkets and hypermarkets around Spain will be taking part this weekend, 22 and 23 November, in the massive foodbank collection known as the Gran Recogida.

The event is organised by the Spanish foodbank federation which comprises 55 associated foodbanks, including the Costa del Sol's Bancosol.

In the province of Malaga, some 330 stores will be participating in the collection with the help of 4,000 volunteers, who will be encouraging shoppers to buy something extra to leave behind for families in need.

This year Bancosol has set a target of 700,000 kilos (700 tonnes) of foodstuffs, hoping to better last year's total of over 600,000 kilos. The foodbank helps around 47,000 people on the Costa del Sol and throughout the province of Malaga who lack the resources to put a decent meal on the table every day.

The aid is distributed through the 194 organisations Bancosol works with.
