Medieval ruins have already appeared on the site which was formerly home to the Astoria Cinema in Malaga before excavations have even begun in earnest.

The demolition of the cinema on the Plaza de la Merced has uncovered what is thought to be part of a wall from a twelfth-century Moorish settlement.

Raúl López, the city's Planning Councillor, said that the regional ministry of Culture's experts would now be able to assess the site.

The official archaeological survey that the city council has planned for the site is expected to take at least six months.

The plot should eventually house an underground auditorium, and several floors above will have restaurants and bars.
