The regional government says the low water reserves in Andalucía are "worrying", especially in Almeria province and Malaga, and it is looking at ways to guarantee supplies if there isn't enough rain during the autumn months. One idea under consideration is to activate underground wells to preserve the water in the reservoirs.
"We need to give those who need to irrigate reassurance that we are doing everything possible so they won't face any difficulties," says the Junta's regional minister of Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Sustainable Development, Carmen Crespo. However, she says there is no need for alarm. "We are prepared for any emergency situations and we can deal with them," she insists.
Meanwhile, plans are currently being drawn up to connect pipelines between the Campo de Gibraltar and the western Costa del Sol, and the desalination plant could also be brought into operation to ensure supplies.
