A 55-year-old British man resident in Estepona is in custody after his wife, Gloria, 58, was found stabbed to death in the couple's home on Saturday night.

The victim was found dead in the bedroom when police broke into the house in Forest Hills after a neighbour raised the alarm at around 11.30pm. Her husband, Geoffrey, had apparently tried to commit suicide after the fatal stabbing. He was found next to her on the bed with cuts to his wrists.

The couple's son, 15, was outside the house, trying to get in when the police arrived on the scene. He had apparently been literally thrown out of the house by his father during an argument that started before the stabbing.

When police entered the house they found Gloria already dead but called an ambulance for her husband who was still alive. He was taken to the Costa del Sol and hours later transferred to a police cell.

The autopsy revealed on Sunday that Gloria had received more than ten stab wounds to her back and chest as well as several cuts to her hands and arms, as a result of her attempts to defend herself.

The victim, originally from Montejaque, had not previously reported her husband for domestic violence. She is the second fatal victim of violence against women in the province of Malaga in 2019. On 12 January Leonor, 47, was killed in Fuengirola.

Estepona town hall declared three days of official mourning. Local residents joined two gatherings on Sunday to hold a minute's silence.
