One man died on Monday after the car he was driving fell from the Río Verde viaduct on the AP-7 toll road, the stretch visible crossing the valley behind Puerto Banús. Police say only one person was inside the vehicle which landed some 50 metres below in undergrowth near the Marbella-Istán mountain road.

Emergency services were called just after 1pm as several witnesses reported seeing the car shoot off the side of the elevated motorway, going over the barriers.

Rescue crews first had to try to find the vehicle, without knowing how many people had been inside, by searching the vegetation alongside the Río Verde riverbed.

Local Police officers were first on the scene and confirmed that there was only one person inside, who was reported to be a man older than 50 and of foreign nationality who is believed to have been a businessman based at Nueva Andalucía's Centro Plaza shopping centre.

According to police sources, the car was travelling from Marbella towards Estepona and, for an unknown reason, was catapulted off the sides possibly falling in the gap between the two parallel bridges carrying the roadway in each direction. The barrier is reinforced and it is not known how much it was damaged.

The twin-bridge viaduct runs at a height of between 50-100 metres across the valley carrying the AP-7 toll road from Malaga to Sotogrande.
