Salsa Imobiliaria, the company which owns the El Ingenio shopping centre in Vélez-Málaga, has announced plans for a major refit and expansion of the existing building.
The project to modernise the Axarquía's biggest commercial centre will be the first in its 18-year history and is set to cost six million euros. Salsa has said that it hopes to complete the work in time to celebrate El Ingenio's 20th anniversary in 2020.
The centre's director, Leonardo Galdeano, said that the shopping centre is currently "the Axarquía's biggest private employer," providing jobs to 700 people directly and a further 500 indirectly. He added that the modernisation project will create 120 new jobs.
Galdeano also stated that half of all visitors to El Ingenio come from outside Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga and that the proposed plan would boost tourism even more in the area. However, local business associations in Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga oppose the plans, saying that a bigger shopping centre will drive more people away from the town centres, where many independent shops and businesses operate.
