Nerja's deputy police commissioner, Andrés P. C., 28, was hit by a car being driven by a former Nerja councillor in the town on Tuesday.
The ex-politician, Expedito Cabra, 77, said that he had become “distracted” as his car approached a roundabout on the Avenida Pescia near Burriana beach at around 1pm.
The police commissioner was carrying out a routine traffic control with other colleagues at the time of the incident and, according to sources, saw what was happening and acted to prevent another officer from being hit by the car, but ended up being knocked over himself.
The car went into the vehicle in front, which in turn pushed the deputy commissioner over.
The officer was admitted to the Axarquía hospital in Torre del Mar where his condition was initially said to be “serious” but that he was “stable”. Doctors later said that they were awaiting the results of tests, although they confirmed that at that stage his injuries were not being considered as “critical”.
Cabra, who was a councillor from 1979 to 1999, did not require medical attention, despite his son, also called Expedito Cabra, telling SUR that his father had “suffered a dizzy spell” which led to him being “distracted” and causing the crash.
The incident is said to have caused “commotion” in Nerja, where the 28-year-old deputy commissioner has only been in the position for just six months.
