Politicians and environmental groups have joined forces to release five endangered chameleons into the wild at the Artola dunes nature reserve in Cabopino.

It is hoped that they will reproduce in the dunes and create a thriving colony. Efforts have been intensifying in recent years to increase the Costa’s chameleon population.

They were once a common sight along the coast but their habitat has gradually disappeared.

The protected dunes at Cabopino are seen as an ideal place for them to breed.
