  • The proposal, affecting land in La Cala, includes the construction of a semi-Olympic-sized indoor pool paid for by the contract holders

A private firm’s proposal could lead to Mijas becoming home to a motor racing circuit. Land in La Cala has been earmarked for the venture which would involve the construction of circuits, pits and spectator stands, as well as a semi-Olympic- sized swimming pool in order to meet local residents’ demands.

According to sources connected with the project, the so-called ‘Ciudad del Motor’, (Motor City), would be built in La Cala on 200,000 square metres of land.

The idea has already been submitted to the town hall, which has started a consultation process to gauge the opinion of local residents, a step that municipal sources say is “essential” to getting project approval.

The construction of the racing complex would cost around four million euros, while the indoor 25-metre pool would cost 1.4 million euros. According to the study, the racing complex and the pool would create 25 jobs and boost business activity in the area.

The complex would be used for activities similar to the Ascari circuit in Ronda. It would include a track for GT motor racing and a karting circuit four kilometres long, the longest in the province, as well as pit facilities and spectator stands. This would enable the complex to host commercial launches of vehicles and prototype tests on an international level.

The construction of the swimming pool by the firm with the contract to build the racing complex will save the town hall a “considerable expense” said sources, referring to repeated demands from local people for a pool facility.

No fixed dates have been provided but the development firm already has the full plans drawn up and is waiting for the next step in the process to award the contract.
