A charity fundraiser at a popular expat restaurant raised 4,620 euros for the cancer hospice Cudeca last Friday.

Some 150 guests helped raise the funds during the event at the Roman Oasis restaurant in Sabinillas.

The restaurant shut down last summer after 36 years but re-opened for two charity events this month.

Englishman Paul Hickling, 74, who opened the restaurant in 1983 after visiting the Roman Baths in Sabinillas, told SUR in English: "It was fantastic. We sold out and raised all this wonderful amount of money for Cudeca."

One more charity event is due to be held at the Roman Oasis in aid of the Asociación Gatos de Manilva (AGDM) next Monday 9 September. The event starts at 8pm and costs 50 euros per person and will include drinks, dinner and live music. The AGDM helps to look after the street cats of Manilva and the money raised will help feed and care for the local cats that are rescued.
