David's passion for writing began with science fiction. Without having a clue what he was doing he managed to land a book deal and agent at the age of 23; four novels followed between 1974 and 1979.

The first, The Sunset People, is garnished with aliens, ferocious creatures and the remnants of the human race. The following books focused on strange legends, time travel and the walking dead.

He no longer writes science fiction, although he admits it is hard to ignore it when writing his historic novels.

I'm not writing science fiction now, except certain fantastic elements keep creeping back in however hard I try to keep them out, David says.
