Not only has Marbella experienced a significant rise in tourism in recent years, the resident population is also increasing and this is reflected in a rise in the number of births to Spanish and foreign mothers. In 2015 the registered population rose by 1,207 habitantes, an increase of 0.9%, bringing the total to over 140,000 for the firsttime. In the same year, there was an increase in the number of births at the Costa del Sol hospital for the first time in seven years. The increase was small - there were 2,782 births and 2,724 deliveries, compared with 2,747 births and 2,696 deliveries - but that one per cent was enough to make a difference to the statistics. The number of foreign mothers giving birth at the hospital also rose from 36.4 per cent to 39 per cent in two years.
