Getting motivated

If you haven't felt like getting out in the garden due to the cold winds (and even snow in some areas) then the return of the sunshine should give you the motivation to get out there and start preparing beds for the spring. Digging is the best way to improve the soil; breaking up solid clumps to make it easier to rake over before planting. At the same time adding bucket- loads of well composted organic material will also improve the structure of the soil and add important nutrients.

If wielding a fork is too much for you then an alternative method used by many is to lightly fork over the top layer of soil, add organic material on the top and let the worms do the rest.
