Following two incursions this week by kayakers into the Gorham's Cave complex, which is a protected World Heritage Site, the authorities have issued a reminder that it is an offence to land on Governor's Beach and/or access the caves. The penalties range from up to three months in prison, a hefty fine or both.
There are security cameras to monitor the approach by sea, and anyone attempting this is immediately reported to the police.
The cave complex, which is the last known home of the Neanderthals, is vulnerable to damage and dangerous because of the possibility of rockfalls. The site is also home to bird species which need to be protected.
