There have been calls from the Teachers Union, opposition politicians and students themselves on social media to delay the start of the school year in Gibraltar's two new comprehensive schools, due to concerns that there is a rush to get them ready on time.

Bayside and Westside are due to open on 11 September and teachers have already gone back to work, but say some construction work is still continuing on the upper parts of the buildings and there have been a couple of accidents, one when a teacher walked into an unmarked plate glass door when there was no power and another received a slight electric shock from a switch.

There is pressure on the government to put off the start of term until the following Monday, but they say this won't be necessary. They describe the two incidents as very minor and the problems have been resolved, and say the brand new schools are safe and will be ready on time.
