Brussels puts a stop to planned development of Valdevaqueros

The European Commission has confirmed that no projects for the development of Valdevaqueros will be granted permission.
In a letter to the environmental group Verdemar-Ecologistas, who have been fighting to save this protected area since 2012, the Directorate-General for Environment of the European Commission states that the plans to partially develop Valdevaqueros in Tarifa have been dismissed. It goes on to say that no development project for the area has been or will be authorised by the commission.
In the statement, it pointed out that the Junta de Andalucía had decreed a protection plan for the coastal regions of Andalucía in May 2015 which guarantees the preservation of natural spaces deemed not suitable for development, thus avoiding deterioration of the countryside.
Valdevaqueros and Los Lances beach are both regarded as natural spaces and as such the plans have not been approved.
Antonio Muñoz, spokesman for the environmental group in the Campo de Gibraltar, took the opportunity to clarify that “although a major project was planned for the area fortunately the local government has no choice now but to protect it”.
