Alhama de Granada based British artist Gary Elderfield will be exhibiting a collection of his paintings at the Bio Beach Club restaurant in El Morche, Torrox, from 27 May.

INFORMATION

  • What. Exhibition of paintings by British artist Gary Elderfield

  • Where. Bio Beach Club, Paseo Marítimo, El Morche (Torrox)

  • When. 27 May to 23 June. 9am-11pm. Restaurant closes on Tuesdays.

The exhibition will include approximately 30 paintings inspired by Gary's many trips to Vietnam, Colombia and the Philippines, as well as work he has done here in Spain.

The painter has spent the majority of his adult life overseas and has lived in Alhama de Granada for 10 years. He has also lived in Colombia and Germany and spent long periods in East Africa, Southeast Asia and Central America.

"I still try to get away every winter for a few months, Covid excluding, and paint on location," the traveller explains, adding, "Developing countries attract me more than anything and are inspirational to my work. You go outside and see a lot of colour."

Gary explains that he mainly uses oil, but some of his paintings are done in acrylic, which he says he prefers to use when travelling "for its quick drying time."

Gary, 55, was born and grew up in London. He explains that he comes from an artistic family and that he's "always painted", but it's only in recent years that he has really had the time to pursue his passion.

Gary has worked in house restoration and has had a number of commissions here in Spain. He admits that he wants to concentrate on his painting now and has a studio set up in his Alhama home, which he also renovated himself.

The painter says that he feels "at home in Alhama" and is well known among the local community, having painted scenes from a number of the local bars, restaurants and other businesses. "I try to capture people doing their everyday things."

Gary's rich and vibrant paintings bring to life the worlds that he has experienced. "My work reflects the worldly lifestyle that I have led and the different cultures that I have experienced. I like to capture the moment, the local feeling, the movement," he says.

The exhibition in El Morche will run until 23 June.
