The English Cemetery in Malaga, which in February had to close its gates during the week and appealed for support in order to be able to continue to pay its basic running costs, has managed to stay afloat thanks to visitors' entrance fees at the weekends and the generosity of the public.

With the onset of spring weather combined with a relaxation of Covid-related restrictions, cultural activities will begin again, starting on 22 May at 9pm with a performance by the El Trovador group of their work Mademoiselle Traviata. Tickets are available from Eventbrite.

Open day

The English Cemetery Foundation has also announced its intention of taking part on Tuesday May 18th in International Museum Day, whose objective is to raise awareness of the fact that museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

The English Cemetery, which is listed by the Junta de Andalucía as being a "Bien de Interés Cultural" (asset of cultural interest), identifies wholly with this aim, and will open its gates free of charge next Tuesday, from 11am to 8pm.

The Foundation's President, Bruce McIntyre, said: "We are taking the opportunity to invite the community to come and visit this beautiful example of Malaga's international heritage. We have been really touched by the response to our difficulties of members of the local community who have volunteered to help or donated money, and this is one way to thank them and get the message out to more people that the English Cemetery is a fascinating place to visit!"
