26 January. How Viruses Inspire Purity in Architecture and Design by Alejandro Carazo. The so called Spanish flu of 1918-20 cost at least 20 million lives. What is less well known is that it provoked a revolution in architecture and design. Out went the superfluous decoration and furniture that were hotspots for dirt and disease. In came a new emphasis on pure lines, natural light and air. In 1925 Gerrit Rietveld designed the Schroder House with an innovative window system that eliminated the barrier between the inside and outside. He was followed by other pioneers such as Miles Van der Rohe, le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. The talk will highlight their iconic designs and demonstrate why they have a relevance for today.

23 February.

Oscar Wilde – Up close by Giles Ramsay. “I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works.” I examine the public and private life of one of the world’s most original and controversial artists. Born into a moderately respectable Dublin family Oscar Wilde recreated himself as an international celebrity and wrote a series of short stories and plays that charmed the world. In 1890 he also published the last of the great myths – The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ten years later Wilde, devoured by his fame, his demons and his decadence, would be dead.
