The village of Yunquera is gearing up for the 11th edition of the popular Feria de Vino y la Castaña, a gastronomic festival that promotes local chestnuts and mosto wine, a grape juice that adheres to an age old local recipe. The Wine and Chestnut Festival offers visitors the chance to savour chestnuts in every form, including roasted, candied or in syrup. Hundreds of people attend the festival in order to pay tribute to the chestnut - a typical autumn delicacy - and to sample the exquisite mosto that is made from grapes grown in the Sierra de las Nieves. The juice is made with freshly crushed grapes and contains the skins, seeds, and stems of the fruit. The Sierras de Ronda is considered one of the best chestnut producing regions in Andalucía, and Yunquera demonstrates a long food-producing history and a culture that encompasses this tradition.

The event will highlight other local specialties, like malcocinao, a hearty stew made with chickpeas, bacon, tripe, chorizo and black pudding.

The festival is organised to promote the cuisine, customs and handicrafts of Yunquera and there will also be a craft and farmers' market offering olive oil, pickled fruit, honey, handmade sweets, bread and cured meats.

Along with the annual La Castaña Flamenco Festival and traditional verdiales groups, visitors can also take advantage of free guided tours, where they will discover Yunquera's eventful past.

The feria, which is free, is held in the Calle Blas Infante (next to the town hall) on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October.
