The first edition of the Festival Internacíonal de Salsa Costa del Sol, an exciting Latin music and dance festival in Torremolinos, is organised to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Havana, the Cuban capital founded by the Spanish in 1519.

The festival will bring together great musical figures from Havana, including the world-renowned Cuban composer and guitarist of the Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades Ochoa. He will be joined by fellow performers Isaac Delgado, Adonis Panter and Osain del Monte. The highlight of the festival will be the performance of Haila Maria Mompié, considered one of the greatest exponents of Son Cubano, a genre of music and dance that originated in the highlands of eastern Cuba during the late 19th century.

The salsa festival will be complemented by an extensive programme of activities such as salsa and Cuban rumba workshops, Latin gastronomy and an exhibition of memorabilia of Cuban record company EGREM.

Organised by Malaga-based promotion company Producciones Raíces, with the collaboration of the Torremolinos town hall, the festival aims to consolidate itself as a reference to the genre in Europe.

The festival will begin at 9pm today (Friday) with an opening gala held in the Príncipe de Asturias auditorium, during which Eliades Ochoa will be honoured for his contribution to spreading the influence of Cuban music. The opening gala is only accessible to holders of a full pass, which allows access to all three days and costs 77.85 euros.

The festivities will continue in the auditorium on Saturday from 1pm until 4am; and on Sunday from 1pm until 11.30pm. Tickets for individual days cost 42.50 euros from www.eventbrite.es
