The popular Oktoberfest beer festival, an event that promotes traditional Bavarian culture and gastronomy, is being celebrated in Torremolinos until Sunday. The festival, which is incorporated into the cultural agenda of cities around the world, is based on an event that began in Munich in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Prince of Bavaria and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

The four-day festival, now in its fifth edition in Torremolinos, got under way on Thursday when the German consul for Malaga, Arnulf Braun, presided over the inauguration ceremony and the opening of the first keg of German ale.

The festivities will take place in Plaza La Nogalera each day from midday until midnight and will feature typical Bavarian music and the Oompah brass bands traditionally associated with the beer halls of Munich.

A huge marquee has been installed in the square where visitors can enjoy a variety of handcrafted lagers and a selection of traditional German beers, including Weizen, one of the country's favourite ales. A selection of traditional cuisine, like pretzels, frankfurter sausages and sauerkraut, will also be available, along with a variety of strong alcoholic schnapps and herbal liquors.

The festival will continue until Sunday 15 September.
