Alhaurín de la Torre El Portón del Jazz, one of the most anticipated summer music festivals in the Malaga province, will take place in Alhaurín de la Torre every Friday throughout July.

CONCERTS

  • Friday 5 July. Chucho Valdés.

  • Friday 12 July. Larry Goldings, Peter Berstein and Bill Stewart trio.

  • Friday 19 July. Myles Sanko.

  • Friday 26 July. U Circle Breakers.

Held in the grounds of the Finca El Portón, this popular jazz festival has been running for more than 25 years and offers a programme of concerts performed by some of the genre's most celebrated musicians.

The event, which includes the IV Concurso Portón del Jazz, has gained popularity over the years and is now considered one of the most important festivals of its kind. Concerts have sold out in advance in previous years and organisers strongly advise the reservation of tickets.

The festival kicks off on Friday 5 July (today) with a concert by the most influential figure of modern Afro-Cuban jazz, Chucho Valdés, son of the legendary pianist Bebo Valdés.

Other musicians to appear are Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart, a New York trio defined as the "best organ trio of the last decade whose art goes beyond jazz"; and British musician Myles Sanko, whose music is an amalgam of hip-hop, soul and jazz.

The festival will end with a grand finale concert given by the U Circle Breakers on Friday 26 July. Led by composer and conductor Ernesto Aurignac, this 18-piece group from Malaga are known as the Futurist Orchestra because their music seeks to free itself from musical cannons and conventionalism. The orchestra's musical concept offers an original repertoire fusing aspects of jazz, flamenco, classical and Latin music with its own musical impressionism and expressionism.

Each of the concerts, which start at 10.30pm, will be preceded by a performance of one of the participants of the Portón del Jazz competition - the award ceremony of which will take place on Monday 29 July.

Tickets cost between 15 and 20 euros and are available from www.elportondeljazz.com
