Insostenible Big Band kicks off Summer in the Caves festival

A series of shows in the Las Cuevas Rupestres in Coín will take place over the coming weeks

Las Cuevas Rupestres de Coín - the prehistoric caves where Mozarab tribes settled between the eighth and tenth centuries - will host a series of musical concerts that will begin today, Friday 20 July.

The Summer in the Caves Festival will begin tonight with a performance by the Insostenible Big Band. Composed entirely of young musicians from Malaga, the jazz and swing band received rave reviews at the 24th edition of the Malaga Jazz Festival and has become renowned for its freshness, good humour and communication with the public.

The summer festival will incorporate Coín's long-standing flamenco festival - dedicated to one of the town's most celebrated flamenco singers, Pepe de la Isla - on Friday 27 July.

This promises to be a night of pure flamenco, with artists such as Rancapino Hijo (son of Rancapino, one of the last remaining old-school singers), and Luis Muñoz, a gypsy singer born in Montpellier, France, who now lives in Malaga.

This festival has been running for over 35 years and is considered one of the most prestigious flamenco gatherings in Malaga.

On Friday 3 August, award-winning Estepona guitarist, Daniel Casares, will present his latest work, Picassares, a fusion of flamenco and jazz music that interprets some of the passages in the life of Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Casares has become a leading figure in the world of Spanish guitar, performing on some of the biggest stages of the world.

Tickets for all shows, which begin at 10pm, cost five euros and can be purchased from the Convento Santa María de la Encarnación, or from the tourist office in Coín. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the day of the concerts.
