It's no exaggeration to say that this could be the best show that the people of Malaga will see all year. The world renowned Cirque du Soleil opens the doors of its big top here today, Friday to unveil its newest show, Totem.

TOTEM

  • Venue. Big top near the Cortijo de Torres fairground, Malaga.

  • Date. 1 June until 1 July.

  • Tickets. From 28 euros. Go to www.cirquedusoleil.com/spain/malaga/totem/buy-tickets

The assembly of the canvas tent was completed last week in the Cortijo de Torres fairground. This was a show in itself, but instead of artists, acrobats and tightrope walkers the event starred more than a hundred technicians and workers equipped with masts and ropes who had been working tirelessly to put up the enormous sheet of tarpaulin.

Building the tent is our way of showing Malaga that we are here, said Javier Pérez González, head of security for the European tour. Last week 76 lorries transported 2,000 tonnes of staging from Barcelona to Malaga in preparation for the event.

The modern circus company has not visited the Costa del Sol in over a decade, but the award-winning Totem promises to be worth the wait. Written and directed by famed Canadian director, Robert Lepage, the Cirque du Soleil's newest show has already won the Drama Desk award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

Totem takes the public on a fascinating journey through human evolution, from the birth of amphibian beings to a future where flight is possible. Spectacular acrobatic performances will serve to enact dramatic moments from the history of evolution.

This is Lepage's second collaboration with the company, after KA, which has enjoyed a permanent residency in Las Vegas since 2004.

The show in Malaga will be performed by 46 artists, actors, musicians and singers. Alongside incredible acrobatics, Totem promises a high dose of comedy, emotion and special effects. It is especially revered for its use of detailed scenery and projections whose rhythms beat in perfect time with the artists.

Totem is the Cirque du Soleil's 28th production and has been watched by 4.8 million people since its 2010 premiere in Montreal.
