Benalmádena is to host the ninth edition of the Festival of Christmas Traditions on Saturday 9 December. Organised by the Benalmádena foreign residents department and various local expat associations, the festival is the first in a string activities taking place in the municipality over the Christmas period.

The event will be held in the Plaza de la Mezquita in Arroyo de la Miel and will present the traditional Christmas festivities of more than a dozen different countries, including Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Cuba, India and the UK.

The festival, which will be inaugurated by the mayor of Benalmádena, Víctor Navas, will begin with a presentation parade of all the countries and associations involved. Live music and dance shows from around the world will take place throughout the afternoon. These will include performances by the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Choir, the Ballet African Sunugal from Senegal, the Bolly Danz of India and the Danza Huella de Chile.

Several British organisations will also participate, including the popular Banana Studios dance group and A Touch of Class, who will be performing their festive Christmas Crackers show. Complete with traditional characters like Captain Hook and the Ugly Sisters, the show is sure to include all the slap-stick humour of pantomime.

All of the participating countries will be offering their traditional Christmas food and drinks, from the customary mulled wine and mince pies to more exotic dishes from South America and Asia.

There will be plenty of activities to keep children occupied, including a bouncy castle, face painting and festive games and competitions. There will also be a special visit from Father Christmas, the Slavic Santa Ded Moroz, and the Three Kings.

The festival, which is free, begins at 11am with traditional Christmas music performed by the International Novaschool Choir.
