Mijas Pueblo is gearing up for the tenth edition of the popular Friendship Day Festival, which this year will be dedicated to Italy.
The event, which is organised by the foreign residents department of Mijas town hall, will be held in the main square in Mijas Pueblo from 12 noon until 6pm on Saturday 30 September. The friendship day has been organised in collaboration with Italian artists and musicians who live on the Costa del Sol, such as the well-known trio, Senza Cateta.
This event forms part of a series of activities the foreigners department has organised with different countries in past years: it is intended to help integrate the 120 nationalities that live in the municipality of Mijas.
The Vice-Consul of the Italian Consulate in Granada, Marcello Memoli, and the Mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, will inaugurate the festival at 12 noon, with the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the day. Representatives of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and associations such as Italian Residents in Spain will also be present.
The programme will start with a special homage to Italy and there will be free live music performances throughout the day, including a fusion of Spanish and Italian folklore dances.
The traditional Italian flag dance will be performed by the student dancers of the Fuengirola-based Pop Academia Fama. There will also an exhibition of the paintings of Italian artist, Loretta Ariani.
Visitors will be able to savour typical Italian cuisine, like risotto, lasagne or tomato and mozzarella filled focaccia. They will also have opportunity the buy Italian wines, bread and cheeses from the small street market. Representatives of Italian businesses and cultural associations on the Costa del Sol will be present and children can participate in numerous activities, including a pizza workshop.
There will also be a street parade of vintage Italian cars and motorcycles during the afternoon.
