Vélez-Málaga is attracting some of the biggest names in flamenco this August with its programme of Flamenco Fusion nights, all of which are free, in the open-air auditorium in Cerro de San Cristobal.
Tonight, 11 August, Sanlúcar de Barrameda-based artist Naike Ponce will be joined by highly-respected guitarist, Paquete.
Jorge Pardo, who is one of Spain’s all-time best-selling flamenco recording artists, will be closing the season of flamenco on 18 August.
Helping to promote the flamenco nights is British resident, Ben Cooper, who is a self-confessed “total nut and proud, card-carrying member” of his local flamenco club. He says that when Flamenco Abierto Axarquía, the organisation behind Flamenco Fusion, started, he “did everything” he could “to publicise the events to non-Spanish audiences”.
